Challenge

Through grading exams as a teaching assistant, I noticed recurring patterns that caused students to lose points even when they appeared to understand the course material. Students sometimes left questions completely blank, provided incomplete responses, misread multiple-choice questions, or struggled to manage their time across an exam.

Many of these challenges were not necessarily related to content knowledge, but to exam-taking strategy. Because exam formats vary significantly across courses and instructors, the challenge was to identify transferable strategies students could apply across different types of assessments.

Goal

Create an approachable, self-paced video series that helps students develop practical strategies for navigating exams more confidently and effectively. Video instruction allowed me to explain the reasoning behind each strategy, provide examples from my experiences as both a student and teaching assistant, and give learners the ability to pause, replay, and revisit individual topics as needed.

Audience

College students who understand course material but may struggle with exam-taking strategy, time management, interpreting questions, or test confidence.

Approach

I designed the content as a seven-part self-paced video series using PowerPoint presentations recorded through Zoom and hosted on Teachable. I organized the series around the full exam experience rather than focusing only on what happens during a test. Students begin with foundational test-taking and study strategies, move into techniques for managing the exam itself, and finish with post-exam reflection and strategies for future improvement.

Breaking the content into individual modules allowed students to work through the entire sequence or return to specific topics based on their needs.

What I Created - 7-Part Video Series

  1. Introduction to Test-Taking Strategies
How to maximize test performance and approach exams strategically.

  2. Building Effective Study Habits
Pre-exam preparation and developing more effective study routines.

  3. Managing Your Time During a Test
Strategies for pacing, prioritizing questions, and using available exam time effectively.

  4. Reviewing Your Test Results
Using completed exams as feedback and identifying strategies for future improvement.

  5. Efficient Reading & Note-Taking Strategies
Techniques for processing information efficiently and preparing useful study materials.

  6. Tips for Success in Online Test Environments
Strategies for preparing for and navigating online assessments.

  7. Summary & Key Takeaways
Consolidation of the major strategies and final recommendations students can apply to future exams.

Each module combined visual PowerPoint instruction with narration, examples, and observations from my experiences taking and grading college exams. The series was hosted on Teachable so students could progress through the material asynchronously and revisit individual lessons when needed.

Optional Next Steps

Pilot the series with students and collect feedback on clarity, usefulness, and confidence. Future revisions could incorporate practice questions, short knowledge checks, downloadable resources, and engagement data to evaluate which modules are most effective and where additional support is needed.
